- July 22, 2006 - Jack Warden, an Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated
actor who played gruff cops, coaches and soldiers in a career that spanned
five decades, has died. He was 85. Elected unanimously. #2
July 21, 2006 Ta Mok, known as "The Butcher" for his
brutality as military chief of the communist Khmer Rouge died Friday,
his lawyer said. He was believed to be 80.Ta Mok, who briefly led the
Khmer Rouge during its final days, was one of two former senior officials
of the movement in detention awaiting trial on charges of crimes against
humanity committed during a 1975-1979 reign of terror, when an estimated
1.7 million Cambodians died of starvation, overwork, diseases and execution. Elected by a vote of 3-2. #3
- Famed soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, a 20th century legend who won
global acclaim for her renditions of Mozart and Strauss, died Thursday
at her home in western Austria, state television reported. She was 90. Elected by a vote of 4-1 |
